The term jazz dance was first used to describe dances done to the new-fangled jazz music of the early 20th century, but its origin lies in the dances brought from Africa by slaves shipped to America. At that time, it referred to any dance done to jazz music, which included both tap dance and jitterbug. A defining feature was its “free conversation-like style of improvisation.”

In terms of the focus of its technique, contemporary dance tends to combine the strong and controlled legwork of ballet with modern dance’s stress on the torso, and also employs contract-release, floor work, fall and recovery, and improvisation characteristic of modern dance.  Originally informed by and borrowing from classical, modern, and jazz styles, it has since come to incorporate elements from many styles of dance.[1] Due to its technical similarities, it is often perceived to be closely related to modern dance, ballet and other classical concert dance styles.

Hip-hop dance refers to street dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop music or that have evolved as part of hip-hop culture. It includes a wide range of styles primarily breaking, locking, and popping which were created in the 1970s and made popular by dance crews in the United States. Though the dance is established in entertainment, including mild representation in theatre, it maintains a strong presence in urban neighbourhoods which has led to the creation of street dance derivatives Memphis jookin, turfing, jerkin’, and krumping.

The dances in older Hindi movies represented supposed dances of the common people, although they involved original choreography. Bollywood dances have evolved as a unique and energetic style. Since they are group dances, they are often used as joyful exercise music.
